Boys Rooms and Nursery Ideas - 15 Mood Boards For Boys

There's a lot going on in the studio right now.  I'm working on  new art, upcoming changes to my website, a new ecommerce platform and a few items, debuting this winter, that will help you design your child's nursery or room.  So to bring some things up to speed here's some new mood boards to inspire, that I've been delinquent in posting.  I'm also including some of my pinner's favorites from Pinterest.  Do you have a favorite?  I'd love to hear which one and why.

Superhero Boys Room in Yellow and Gray Mood Board

With all the superhero movies debuting, boy's superhero rooms are a popular request.  Here I explore the genre with a an Up, Up and Away theme.  Look up in the sky, it's gray and yellow, one of 2013's hottest color combos for boys.  My Up and Away art piece is available from my under the radar Etsy shop.  I haven't announced the store opening so sssshhh.   It's official debut will be announced later in the year.
Superhero Room with a Spiderman and Wolverine Influence Mood Board

Some of the new superhero pieces from my Etsy shop (see the caption above) make their way into this  big boy super room.  It works in superhero without being too cheesy.  The room's look will grow with the boy so it has great value and savings built right in.  The board introduces the neutral brown/tan/taupe color to dial down the primary feel of most superhero offerings.

Classic Sports Bedroom Decor for a Teen Mood Board

Man cave design is hot right now.  There's no reason it can reach into the young men's world.  This sports mood board combines the timeworn finishes of painted woods with the raw and very masculine textures of sisal and burlap.  My vintage art collection recently expanded with the addition of lacrosse and golf.  All are available from my site.

Cowboy Southwest Boy's Room Idea Mood Board
The earthen plains and grassy prairies are celebrated in this mood board.  It's southwestern influence boasts a nostalgic americana feel yet its simple and more modern.  The western art is, as mentioned above, available from my Etsy shop.
Modern Cowboy Nursery Decor Mood Board

Hold off on the wagon wheels and bandana print!  The tumbleweed nursery speaks to the old west in theme yet it does so in a more modern sophisticated way.  The great pouf from Surya and the simple shapes of the rusty bull mount and rocking house relay the idea without all the cowboy campyness.  The cowboy images are part of my latest releases.  They represent the old west in my pop vintage way.  I hope you like them.  Sssshhh, they're from my un-promoted, un-announced Etsy shop which will officially launch later this year.

Boy's Race Car Transportation Room Mood Board

If this were a game show, I'd give you 30 seconds to name that theme.  Correct!  Theming a room doesn't mean you have to go over the top (I know, I'm guilty).  This race car room is updated with a cool ombre rug, the pinterest popular mason jars repurposed as pendant lights and some art from my speedway collection.

Light and Airy Boy's Airplane Nursery Mood Board

A light and breezy nursery with a sky theme is accented with chevron bedding and a few vintage wood accents.  The art is from my Up and Away series which includes kites and hot air balloons.

Here We Go.  Transportation Theme Nursery Mood Board

If you're a DIY'er search the internet for suitcase tables, they're easy to make and very charming.  You can also find a variety of them ready made on Etsy.  Combine those handled charmers with some great woodgrain and slip in some modern textiles and your set.  The theme could go train, plane or automobile real easy.  The America piece is from my American Byways collection.

Teen Tween Surf Travel Theme Room Mood Board

As I'm sure you can see, I prefer for boy's rooms to grow with them.  Not that there's anything wrong with cutesy wootsie, it's just not my thang.... When you can swap a crib for a bed, change out a few pieces and the room ages instantly, that's my favorite.  In this case, we have the reverse.  This teen/tween surf travel room could easily go younger.  Switch out the teen fave papason chair with a glider for bedtime stories and add in some beach themed pillows and its fun for your elementary aged water boy.  The wall art is also from my American Byways series.

A little less Blam Batman Superhero Theme Room
The Batman movies have weaned away from the cheesy and campy days of holy smokes bat bombs and bat nipples (sorry George), so why not go with a less BLAM in the bat room.  Capture the caped crusader with a few implied decor items, subtle themed accessories and bring them together with a few grow-with-time investment furniture pieces.  My less Pow more Pop superhero series of art can add a sophisticated twist to the batcave.

Superman's Alter Ego Geek Chic Boy's Room Mood Board
All that's geeky is groovy.  The worlds most famous nerd boy is Clark Kent and exploring his world would make for a great superhero room.  Focusing on the Metropolis urbanite and eluding to his super persona opens the door to fun accessories, mid century influences and a bit of geek chic.

Classic American Baseball Theme Nursery Mood Board

The classic americana baseball room is realized with my baseball art and color rich pieces from my pals at Newport Cottages.  The traditional wainscoted walls, the gallery art display and charming light fixture create a space that will grow with your little slugger.  Both the art and my vintage striped lamp are available on my site.

Desert Dwellings, Mesa Adventurers and Horseback Hip - Nursery and Kid's Room Design

Cowboy and Southwestern styles live outside the On/Off cycle of most interior decor trends.  While the overall popularity may come and go, there are fans that live the lifestyle not the trend.  Those who love the old west, the american prairies and deserts are happy to know that their passion has hit a resurgence over the past few years and there's no sign of it waining.

By other names, the Navajo, Aztec, Native, Tribal and even Gaucho (from Spain) influence has resulted in a refresh of cowboy and southwest living design.

For children's rooms and nurseries, the classic cowboy look has evolved to include reclaimed woods, faux taxidermy and a less is more modern feel.   Wandering outside of the strict cowboy theme, there's the addition of bears, wolves, camp out and USA traveler rolling into the western icon palette.  Patterns like native geometry, bows and feathers, cow skulls and even dream catchers are all the rage in children's and teen fashion and are popping up in home dec.

I've recently added some new wall art to my portfolio.  It explores these themes.  The group is designed for the home decor market but a few pieces cross over well into my kid theme design stick.

Over on Pinterest I've also created a board exploring the trendier side of the theme with some DIY's, inspirational pictures and links to fun west by southwest goodies.

Color Coma, the Magic of Color and the Power of Green

You've seen them, I know you have.  Those folks standing in the home improvement store, staring at the wall-o-color wonder, the paint chip display.  They are suffering from what I call chasing rainbows, it's a debilitating sickness of epidemic proportions.  These unsuspecting and ambitious homeowners storm the paint department confident in their plans.  "I'm going to paint my room an x,y,z color...yep I am.  I just need to find the right shade."  They arrive at the paint chip color display and like some kind of hypnotic funhouse whirlygig the sheer amount of color options begins to undermine their confidence and send them into a trance.  Wobbly kneed and glossy eyed, they start grabbing random colors...."hmmm, this fuchsia is nice, wait how about bright yellow...oops can't leave out teal, teal is purdy....that's purdy...p u r d y  c o l o r s . . . l o o k   a t   a l l     d   a         p  u   r    d     y          c      o     l     o      r      s".  The poor victims have drops of sweat and a little drool forming as their color coma takes over.

I bring this up because abundant color is all the rage for home decor and fashion!  Every color is the new black.  So while the rainbow spectrum is hot I encourage you to explore.  But, to prevent a big box mental mush meltdown, I want to introduce you to three ways to improve your color swagger and confidence.

1) PAINT CHIP PALS

You need a color buddy who will love you regardless of any color mishap or confusion.  My friend Andrea Currie and her hubs Cliff are working to introduce the world to their full spectrum Paint Chip Pals.

Paint Chip Pals Color Card Dolls Andrea Currie

Andrea is a powerful force in the crafting community, you may have caught her champion worthy glitterness on TLC's Craft Wars, hosted by Tori Spelling.  She wields glitter like a sparkly ninja.

She and Cliff's characters, based upon paint color cards, are in development as plush dolls and colorful accessories.  You can help Pinky, Gaareen and all their friends paint our world and prevent color coma by visiting the Currie's Kickstarter campaign.  Your support can earn you Paint Chip Pal swag of your very own.  My favorite is  Blooty.

Send some Kickstart-ing funds their way and watch your greens turn into a rainbow of color.  Head over to my Rainbow-tastic Blog Hop post for more info and a chance to win a Paint Chip Pal.

2)  SKIP THE PAINT GO STRAIGHT TO THE DECOR

Avoid choosing paint as a way to bring color into your home and decorate with color instead.   If you have neutral colored walls and want to add more color pizazz then consider furniture, accessories and decor as your palette for rainbow nirvana.

Here I've created a mood board to illustrate how colorful a craft room for you and the family can be with some fun and whimsical hues.  The magic of mixing and matching multiple colors will help you avoid the doldrums of a simple color palette and allow you to explore your inner color cravings.  You've heard practice makes perfect, right?  If you want to play with your own mood boards and decorate your color needful room virtually, there are a ton of great collaging sites to do so, such as Olioboard.com and Sampleboard.com.

Craft Room Colorful Mood Board Decor Ideas Aaron Christensen

Let's play a game of eye spy.  Within this colorful craft room mood board, you'll not only find some Paint Chip Pals, you will find my latest wall art introductions of "Love Knows No Color", "Fill Your Heart With Rainbows" and "Color Outside the Lines".  All of which are available as canvas reproductions from my site and a network of 1500 boutiques nationwide.  They're my vaccination for the colorless lifestyle.

You will also spy a quick an easy DIY project which is my third cure for the color coma.  Craft your way into remission!

3) INTRODUCE COLOR THROUGH CRAFT

Create your very own Crayon Monogram Alphabet Letter.  You'll feel safe and sound playing with your childhood faves the crayon.  Arrange and rearrange them to explore your favorite combinations.  And maybe they'll inspire some paint colors.

crayon monogram diy craft

This easy to assemble craft can personalize your art space, child's room or is a perfect gift for a beloved teacher.  All you need is some foam core or thin wood panel, crayons, a sharp knife and some hot glue.

Excuse me sir....maam, can I help you with something or bring you a tissue, you're drooling.  Welcome back from your chasing rainbows fever.  I hope my poppy, coral, greeny so you can rest color medicine helped you in your quest for a full spectrum.

If you'd like a chance to win a Paint Chip Pal for your very own, visit my Rainbow-Tastic Holiday Blog Hop Post.  You'll find out more about these little guys, their creators and can visit more color inspiring posts by other artisans.

Geek Chic - Revenge of the Nerds

Oh, isn't it cute that little Abby wants to be a princess and Aden wants to be a baseball player?  Those are decor themes we can get behind.  A little Disney gobbledy gook decor and her room becomes a castle.   Paint the boy's room team colors and hang a bat on the wall and it's a MLB paradise.  Brush your hands together, you're done....easy.  Right?  Not so fast....

Well what do you do when your sweet pea proclaims she wants to be a Endomolecularbiologist or your sure to be a little leaguer says Nanotechnological Bioinformatics System Integration Researcher?  Gulp, the silence is prolonged, the stuttering begins and for a brief moment you can hear the squeaking wheels inside parents heads grinding to a halt....errrrrrrrr....klunk.  What?  Sorry, kiddos you're going to have to pick out a predetermined fantastic identity that matches the offerings on the shelves at your local big box store.  Forget astrophysics, come on, don't you want to be a cowboy, Batman, a smells-like -stawberries imp or a one of those 12 inch tall fashion dolls?  Look there's matching sheets!

Times have changed.  While there's no coordinated bedding with accountant or lawyerly like patterns on it, we're seeing the industry mold break in a new direction.  That is one that embraces intellect and celebrates the word Geek as a term of endearment.  If your little one loves to read, enjoys math or questions the wonders of the world with the scientific method, you should be able to decorate their room with those interests.

To fulfill the wish for brilliant mind decor, I've introduced a line of children's wall art that explores inner nerd-dom.  The collection includes ABC and numbers charts in a retro chalkboard style, a new US map and more.

Superhero Worship- Decor Ideas and Character Study Part 3

Let's just assume that Peter Parker came into some cash peddling his Spiderman action shots and decided to upgrade his spidey pad, which is a 10 x 12 room at Aunt Mays or a tiny off campus apartment.  There's not enough room for splendid couches or cash for spendy art but he selects furnishings that speak to him and make his Spidey decorating senses tingle (ewww, I know).

Well,"Spidey goes to Ikea and Home Goods"  Issue-1 would make for a boring comic book read.  So I've decided to do it for him.  Here are my picks for the upgraded web digs.

In my series of Superhero Man Cave storyboards for Superman, Batman and now Spidey, I've selected a collection of goods that I think speak to their dual-identity personalities.

Here in Spiderman's young man cave, the look is eclectic.  A combination of what could be hand-me-downs, some arty stuff created by his college art major buddies and maybe a few things he had crafted out of webbing during his time as Venom.  The posters, tacked to the wall, explore his own persona and the enemies that want to squish him.  The one piece of art that Spidey sprang for is a portrait of his beloved red-headed love interest.

Spiderman's college apartment or Aunt May's extra room
is fit for the eternal on-again-off-again bachelor.

I was hoping to find a Spidey inspired mini fridge and microwave, but no such luck.  Every college student has to have them.  Keep your eye out for me.

Superhero Worship- Decor Ideas and Character Study Part 2

I went digging around the internet looking for inspiring products for a boy's superhero room and came away with a collection of things that would be perfect for an adult's room or man cave.  So for fun, I've compiled three story or mood boards exploring the imaginary interiors of a few favorite superheroes.

Number two, of the series of three, is a design for whom is probably the most revered and loved superhero of all time, Superman.

Superman / Clark Kent room decor ideas for his man cave.
Superman might have a fortress of solitude but I'm sure he'd prefer to hang his cape in a suped up man cave.

Throughout the Superman genre of comics,  movies and cartoons, you never quite get a glimpse of him taking time off, sitting back in his apartment Skyping Ma and Pa Kent, napping with Krypto the Super Dog or having the Justice League over for a potluck and poker game.   Even the Man of Steel needs to some down time.  So, to outfit his urban Metropolis bachelor pad, I've assembled a few components that I think speak to him as a supehero, mild mannered reporter, alien with advanced powers and conservative farm boy, at heart.

With his well tailored, classic look as Clark Kent, I felt he'd gravitate toward a neo-classic and art deco style befitting his metropolitan persona.  This style also gave room to explore, through decor, his origins as a cross universe, rocket sent orphan.  With his x-ray capable vision, how would he see the world?  Would he switch back and forth and see the inner workings of things and come to embrace that revealed vantage point?  I thinks so, so I've included an amazing x-ray couch with a transparent covering, a "see-through" chair and a couple art posters which may reveal his view of everyday humans when his powers are kicked in.

Some of the items may be a bit spendy, for a reporter's salary, but as a faster than a speeding bullet kinda guy, he could be the ultimate in Craigslist shoppers, searching bargains and being the first to show up worldwide within seconds.  Lifting a concrete and steel chair up to his twelfth floor apartment wouldn't be issue either.  The American flag is an art piece made from melted plastic army men, which I thought might have some kind of psychological meaning to him with regard to his powers, balance of intervention and his allegiance.

Unlike his Justice League partner, Batman's pad featured on the storyboard Post #1 , Superman's man has a slight bit of whimsy and "boy scout" optimism to it.

With the new Superman movie reboot coming and its likely conforming to the less-cartoon, more real-life approach to heroes trend, will we catch a glimpse of his bachelor pad?  Time will tell.  In the meanwhile, I hope you enjoyed my exploration in Supe's decor.  Next up is Spiderman and his Peter Parker persona.

Now back to designed a boy's room....

Superhero Worship- Decor Ideas and Character Study Part 1

Burning up the box offices are all things Superhero.  With both Marvel's and DC's super smash of movies the trend isn't going to end soon.  We've seen the dark knight Batman reboot his way to the top, Spiderman and Superman's versions are underway.  The Avenger's movie, with it's amazing cgi make heroes like the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America believable and enjoyable to watch.

This got me thinking.  While working on a client's son's room, which will be superhero in theme, I went searching for products on the internet.  Frankly, I've seen it all and most of it is too literal for me with logos, faces and the mighty corporate branding all over it.  What if I took a different approach?  What if, like I tend to, explored the theme in a less than literal way?

So while I dug into the personalities and characteristics behind the heroes, I started taking note of some really amazing products that speak to whom the superheroes are by inference.  So after hours of gathering product picks for the boy's room, I ended up with a ton of ideas saved for a less than little boy version of a superhero room.  While there might not be a demand for grown up rooms decorated in superhero, I though this would be a fun exploration.

I'd like to start by introducing you to my first of three storyboards.  This first one explores, from a design aspect, a brooding, angry man, whose night life hiding behind a mask interferes with his relationships, compromising his shallow persona as a gregarious, millionaire playboy.  You guessed it.  Bruce Wayne a.ka. Batman, the Dark Knight.

I've chosen art, furniture and decor items that, in my opinion, reflect his life as a tortured soul, man and larger than life superhero.
Batman Bruce Wayne interior decor exploration and ideas
What if Batman / Bruce Wayne wanted a man cave instead of a bat cave?
Other than his butler and future sidekick, his closest relationships are those with his enemies.  Therefore, I would imagine he'd find a twisted kind of comfort in having reminders of his arch nemesis' around.   His style would be eclectic, and expensive opting for fine art collectables and one of a kinds, reminding him that he has the net worth to be lavish.  Of course his color palette would be dark.  He'd find interest in the textural variances of materials in black instead of appreciating color.  His fondness for high tech would push him towards a more contemporary style with a few select "high brow"accessories thrown in.

I had to throw in the shakespeare bust as a tribute to the campy old Batman series from the 60's.

What do you think, did I take it the direction you would have gone?  There's the whole other universe of tongue-in-cheek, bat-table, bat-couch, yellow and blue that could be explored too.

I'm wrapping up my Superman and Spiderman versions for posts 2 and 3.  Wait until you see the x-ray vision twist on the Supe's man cave.

Boy's Sports Room Inspiration

Sports decor is a request that I get frequently for custom boy's rooms.  It's the combination of classic styling, longevity that goes from toddler to teen that makes it popular with both kids and parents.  As part of my ongoing quest as an artist and designer to bring new and unique offerings to the juvenile market I'm launching my latest art series.  The new football, baseball and soccer pieces revisit the genre with a contemporary style combined with classic and nostalgic accents.  Available in canvas reproductions in 14 x 14 inch and 30 x 30 inch dimensions.  As of this writing, the new additions are being added to the offerings of popular children's room boutiques, internet and catalog companies worldwide that carry my art line, as well as our online boutique.

I thought it might be fun to offer an inspiration guide showing a way that my new wall art can easily be combined with some of the products available through popular retailers.
