Sports Wall Art and Interior Decor for Boys, Tweens and Teens Released! - The Rough Game Collection

The Rough Game Sports Wall Art and Decor Collection by Aaron Christensen

With its loose illustrative style, black and white imagery the new Rough Game Collection is an exciting one to reveal.  I've had a love for monochromatic design and until this series never really explored the idea.  It was fun working within the boundaries yet exploring the unlimited ways to interpret a black and white theme.  The collection ended up with 10 images including baseball, football, lacrosse, soccer, golf, basketball, hockey, a general trophy piece and an abstract scoreboard.

To round out the collection, I've also created a fabric series via Spoonflower.com.  My customers have requested more and more fabric, as they like to create their own accessories like pillows, bedding and gifts.

Among the art, you'll find a personalized name plaque that can be customized by name and a black canvas pillow.

I've had requests for inspirational pieces, which are a rarity for me.  Not that I don't like inspiration, I just love to have text as a visual piece and not to be "read" literally.  But, in this case the art lent itself to a couple fine pieces, available as poster prints.

Teen Bedroom $300.00 Makeover Challenge - Today's Creative Blog

A dear friend I worked with years ago turned creative blog high priestess asked for a favor and presented me with a challenge.  Could I take over her $300.00 gift card budget for a sponsored room makeover and transform her son's room?  And in 72 hours?

Tattered and loopy from a 14 day commercial project that whacked out my body clock with graveyards, swing shifts and too many hours in traffic, I must have been in YES man mode.  Why YES Kim, I'd love too.  Why YES, I'll scour your sponsor Lowe's store for ways to spend the moolah, create unique items and install in 72 hours.  YES, YES, YES.....

Kim's son Lucas' room was trapped in transition.  The explorer theme had yet to evolve to match his young teen soccer loving bravado.

All kidding aside, my friend Kim Demmon and I have reacquainted via our social media endeavors with hers being top notch and mine part of my jack of all trades learning curve.  Her love and labor Today's Creative Blog features an array of talented bloggers, creatives and puts the artistically challenged in touch with tools and technology to make their creative whims easier, better and smarter.

Our project at hand was to transform her son's room utilizing her blog sponsor Lowes $300.00 budget as part of a blogosphere challenge.  Top on Kim and her son's list were a desk, some storage and a fresh teen attitude.  He had existing bedding from Target and lot's of sports memorabilia, but that was about it.  Pretty much bare bones.  Part of her reluctance to further his room was the disconnect between the bedding and the wall color.  She felt they didn't work together.  I resolved the issue with an unexpected solution.  Can you spot the change in either the bedding or the wall color from the before and after picture?  It's a subtle change that made all the difference in the world.

The bedding was too vibrant, the colors on the verge of fluorescent.  The stark difference between the brilliant white, hunting vest orange and other colors fought with the neutral wall color.  My solution was to treat the bedding in a custom blend of Rit Dyes.  Adding an antiqued over-dye to the bedding enriched the colors, changed the white to cream and toned down the kid-like color palette, making it more mature for a teen.

Sticking to the $300.00 budget I devised a way to cut up and assemble hollow core bi-fold doors into a desk, a headboard, shelving and create a casing around one of those clever ClosetMaid storage cubbies.  Would you believe all of those items cost under $90.00?  The remainder of the budget was spend on paint, sundries, lighting and materials for the custom bulletin board and hexagon shelving, I designed for Lucas.

I had Kim and her husband paint the wall stripe, his existing dresser and name cut-out with a spicy orange.
Given the room's size of 9.5 feet by 11 feet, the dimensions for the desk and cubby worked out great.  Just enough room for his laptop and effective storage.  I crafted the hexagon shelves out of a new pre-cut lumber Lowe's has, it's a super high quality plywood trim with a birch veneer.  I left the edges unpainted to showcase the pattern of the laminated ply.

I took creative liberty to work in one of soccer pieces from my line of children's art.  The Soccer 100 Yards piece is available nationwide through retailers the stock Oopsy Daisy Fine art or online via my website or online retailers.

I enjoyed designing and creating the memo board.  As a matter of fact, I'll provide a D.I.Y on how to make your own turf board in a future post.  I had Kim, with her technological craftiness cut out a vinyl #14 (her son's player number) with her Silhouette Cameo cutting system.  It was a great way to personalize the desk chair.

All in all, I think for $300.00 and within 72 hours we gave Lucas exactly what he needed- a teen room with attitude, a desk and much needed storage.  If you'd like to dive into the details closer, here's a outline for you.

If this makeover's inspiration isn't enough to talk you into making over your child's room, relax I can help.  That's what I do, I create children's rooms.  Visit my site for details and give me a call for a free in-home estimate or to discuss e-consult recommendation.

MATERIALS:

- 24 inch x 24 inch 1/2 MDF Board
- 2 cups of flat finish or matte latex paint in your choice of color
- Additional latex or craft paint for decorative stripes and accents
- 4 tablespoons of un-sanded tile grout
- 8 oz. of Dark Brown craft paint
- Mixing Container
- Disposable small roller/tray kit
- Paint brush
- Masking tape
- Optional spray adhesive
- One 80 or rough grit sanding sponge or sheet paper
- One 150 or fine grit sanding sponge or sheet paper
- Sawtooth hanger or picture frame hanging wire kit

TOOLS:

- Jig Saw with Smooth finish blade
- Protective Goggles
This craft requires the use of power tools. Please read and observe the safety instructions provided with your tool. Always wear safety gear.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Determine your color palette and accent designs for the jersey. Remember that chalk is only available in lighter colors so your jersey should be a darker color. The jersey can be tailored to your favorite sport by changing the accents, stripes or details. Utilizing stencils you could also add text or numbers.

2. Download the jersey template from Jersey Project Template or http://www.embellishmentsstudio.com/embellishmentskids/JersOutAChristensen.pdf

3.Match up the nine template pieces to assemble the image and tape it together. Either cut the template out and trace the image onto the MDF board or spray the back of the template with a light coat of spray adhesive and adhere to the MDF board.

4.Wearing goggles, use the Jig Saw to cut out the traced or adhered jersey image. Lightly sand the edges with 150 grit sandpaper or a sanding sponge.

5.In your choice of color, paint the outside edge of the jersey. Two coats may be necessary. Mix 4 tablespoons of un-sanded grout with the remaining paint, being sure to smooth out any clumps. Apply multiple coats of the grout/paint mix to the jersey using a disposable roller kit. Allow the coats to dry between layers.

6.Once dry, using a combination of masking tape and accent colors, apply your choice of stripes or decorative details to the jersey. Allow to dry overnight.

7.First using the 80 grit sandpaper or sponge, sand the edges of the jersey to distress it and reveal the MDF underneath. You can also sand your painted details back to reveal either the MDF or the base paint underneath. Re-sand those areas and the entire surface with the 150 grit sandpaper/sponge.

8.Dilute some dark brown craft paint with water until it is the consistency of a stain. Dip a rag into the diluted paint and apply to the jersey’s edges or anywhere an antique tone is desired.

9.Allow to dry

10.Mount either a sawtooth hanger or picture hanging wire to the back of the jersey for mounting.

Condition the chalkboard by rubbing the entire surface with chalk. Either leave some chalk residue by lightly erasing the chalk or remove it all with a damp sponge.

Personalize the jersey with numbers, names or personal messages.

Enjoy your project- Aaron

Boy's Sports Room Inspiration

Sports decor is a request that I get frequently for custom boy's rooms.  It's the combination of classic styling, longevity that goes from toddler to teen that makes it popular with both kids and parents.  As part of my ongoing quest as an artist and designer to bring new and unique offerings to the juvenile market I'm launching my latest art series.  The new football, baseball and soccer pieces revisit the genre with a contemporary style combined with classic and nostalgic accents.  Available in canvas reproductions in 14 x 14 inch and 30 x 30 inch dimensions.  As of this writing, the new additions are being added to the offerings of popular children's room boutiques, internet and catalog companies worldwide that carry my art line, as well as our online boutique.

I thought it might be fun to offer an inspiration guide showing a way that my new wall art can easily be combined with some of the products available through popular retailers.
